Morale Visits-Round 2

Mission: Strange Matter
Mirok had begun to look forward to the Morale visits hej was doing with Terry, and felt he had a budding friendship with the other man, which lead his to waiting outside the other man's office instead of down the hall by sickbay.
Terry checked his time and stretched. It was time for the next round of morale visits with Lieutenant Mirok. He grabbed the nearest PADD and started for the door. He half expected the man to be standing in the same spot he was last time, but on the other side of the corridor. When the doors opened, Terry hadn't even gotten a chance to step outside when he saw Mirok standing there.
"Well hello there," said the large Morale Officer. "Didn't expect to see you down here. How's your day been?"
"The usual." Mirok said, chuckling, "I can't believe that I actually enjoy doing this."
"Well," said Terry, stepping out of the office so the doors could close, "I'm glad to hear that. It means things are going well and we're making progress as a team with the patients." He paused for a second and grinned. "At least that was the last report that I got. Our visits last week went over so well that some of the nursing staff have been asking when we're going to return. I have sneaky feeling we're having a positive impact on the patients."
"That's good, it means that the Elements have been smiling not just on us but on the people here as well." Mirok said.
"Indeed," said Terry. He led the way up the corridor towards the entrance to Sickbay. "So how have you been since our last encounter?"
"Less bitter. Happier. More in touch with the Elements."
"That's a good thing," said Terry. "It sounds like you're making progress, too. So, this isn't the first time you've mentioned the Elements. That's Romulan...I thought you were Vulcan?"
"Hybrid." Mirok admitted, "father raised me on Romulus, prior to Hobus."
"Ahh, okay." He was getting a better idea now. "So that I don't mess up in the future, which do you prefer? Romunlan-Vulcan or Vulcan-Romulan? Or one or the other?"
"It doesn't matter. I can play Vulcan if I have to." Mirok said, smiling.
Terry chuckled. "Okay, that works for me. But how about we drop the rank when introduce ourselves to the patients this time. I think they'll be able to tell. Besides, using first names with them in this setting would be more comfortable for them and make us a bit more approachable. Sound like a plan, Lieutenant?"
"Works with me." Mirok replied, running fingers through his hair to comb it back.
The two men approached the doors to the Medical facility. Terry looked over to Mirok, "Ready for round two?"
"Let's do this!"
Terry chuckled at Mirok's enthusiasm. Whether it was real or very well faked, he couldn't tell. But nonetheless, he chuckled. The doors swished open and Terry walked, smiling at the walked by. Then he watched the nurse continue to walk by. "Anyway," said the bald Morale Officer, "let's find ourselves someone that can give us a list of patients."
Mirok lead the way over to a nurse that didn't look busy, "lieutenant Mirok and Ensign Walsh, we're here to visit some of the patients."
This nurse wasn't as cheerful as the one last week. "Oh yes, the happy shuttle is here again." She tapped away at the PADD in her hands and held it out. "Just take this and bypass this station all together. Well, who's it going to be?"
Terry was quite shocked at the response they'd gotten. He took the offered PADD and said thanks. But the nurse was already walking away. "Well, that was unexpected."
"I hope I didn't insult her..." Mirok said, a look on his face somewhere between confused and insulted.
"I...I don't think you did," said Terry. "There's been a lot happening lately and I'd imagine it's finally filtering down to her level. At any rate...." As he looked at the PADD, a thought crossed his mind. Looking to Mirok, he said, "Does anything on here strike your fancy?" He offered the PADD.
Mirok looked over the contents of the PADD, "why don't we just pick one and wing it?"
"Wow, the unplanned approach," said Terry. "You keep surprising me, my friend. Picking one it is, then." Terry reached over, scrolled the screen, closed his eyes, and placed his finger back on the screen. "And what do we have?"
Mirok studied the name, "Kofir...possible Vulcan, maybe?"
Terry opened his eyes. "Ahh, this should be interesting. Let's see what Kofir has been admitted for." He took the PADD and opened the patient chart. "It doesn't appear to be anything debilitating. Urodelan flu...that's odd. Wonder where a Vulcan would have caught that on a starship?"
"Who knows, but unlike you humans, other races tend to be able to catch it fairly easily. Could have been a problem arrising from the symptoms."
"Ahh," said Terry. "Well, that's why I'm a Morale Officer and not a doctor. So let's see if we can make an emotional connection with a Vulcan and increase his morale."
"Right." Mirok responded, "don't mention the whole Romulan part unless I do first, there's some...bad blood..."
Terry smiled. "Oh of course not. Bad blood is putting mildly in some cases." He checked the location again. "According to the PADD, he's in a room that's over there." He slightly gestured with the PADD. "Come on."
Mirok followed Terry into the room, putting on his best Vulcan act.
"Greetings," said Terry. He rendered the proper Vulcan salute to the man. "Live long and prosper."
The Vulcan had his eyes closed--it was difficult to tell if he was asleep--but opened them when he heard Terry. He didn't return the salute, however, instead looking towards Mirok. "What brings you gentlemen here?" He looked at Terry, "are you another nurse, you are wearing the right color. Your friend however isn't, so I assume you're not."
He wondered why the patient didn't return the salute, but let it slide. "I'm the Chief Morale officer," said Terry. "My friend and I are visiting patients, seeing what we can do to help."
Before Kofir could answer, Mirok continued, "even if its just people to have a logical conversation with."
Kofir nodded, "excuse my rudeness when you two entered, the nurses have been nothing if not irritated recently, I think its partially because many races view us as hard to work with."
"That's quite alright," said Terry. "In a place like this, it's hard to get any rest as the medical teams keep checking up on you."
"If they would just let me be, I've come out of this once before." Kofir said.
Mirok nodded, "how old were you when you got it the first time?"
Terry checked the PADD that had Kofir's chart. He wasn't too old, for a Vulcan. But having had Urodelan flu before probably meant that the medical staff didn't want to take any chances. Which is most likely why they kept checking on him.
"I was 15 on the Earth calendar. It was an unfortunate incident, that I very nearly died from." Kofir revealed.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. But thanks to modern medicine, they were able to save you and keep you around for much longer," said Terry. "I'm sure your family appreciated it."
"My father does for sure, my mother died when I was young." Kofir mentioned, before looking at Mirok. "What about you?"
Mirok glanced at Terry as if asking him if he should reveal his heritage.
Terry quietly shook his head. He was fairly certain that it might upset the Vulcan's delicate balance.
"My father was never involved heavily in my life, as he was often off on diplomatic assignments off world. My mother was always a close family member to me." Mirok decided to change the subject, "you were quite young when you got it the first time, did it upset your studies at all?"
"I lost several days worth of studying," he replied. "However, I was able to get caught up with the others in a decent amount of time. This instance, though, has interrupted more than studies. My duty to my department has been affected."
"Your duty to your department is to get healthy right now. A sick comrade is logically going to do work of a lesser quality or volume. Being at your best is currently the best thing for you to do." Mirok did his best to keep his Vulcan act up.
"You are indeed correct," he replied. "Logically, it would befit me to get better so that I may produce work worthy of my being."
The two continued talking for about five more minutes before heading to the next room. An hour passed before they finished this week's round and parted.
