The Benefits of Ben Efits

A young Petty Officer with dark brown hair and eyes the same shade wearing a Command red uniform stumbled into Sickbay with a young Andorian Shen in a gold uniform over one shoulder and supporting a Bolian in a Teal uniform over the other. "Can someone help me?" he called as he staggered under the weight of those he carried as the ship shook under another barrage.
The power flickered very briefly before coming back up to full and the backup systems engaged. It was a bonus that the medical facilities on the ship had independent power systems, but as in the case of any ship taking a pounding, a relay here or there was bound to fail before a redundant system engaged.
T'Lara looked up from her desk through the clear aluminium partition as the lights flickered. Since the yellow alert had been called by the Captain she had just enough time to return to sickbay and slide into her blue lab coat which hung just inside the door of the office she had moved into just a few hours before. It constituted one of the two rules of appearance she had established for herself when on duty, the other keeping her neck-length bobbed hair out of the way, usually with a set of pins or clips. Donning her lab coat was the work of a few moments but the hair required preparation and was cast into general triviality by the arrival of the Petty Officer and his wards.
"Doctor Megara." T'Lara signaled to her colleague and the nursing staff with a hand as she left her office moving quickly to assist.
A Klingon woman turned and revealed herself to be another female medical officer. "Doctor Mar is on the Victorious," she said. "I am Doctor Darpax."
Ben knelt down and eased the wounded crew members down. When he stood up, there seemed to be a spreading dark stain on his uniform that was darker than the rest of it. "Uh..." he started, then fell over.
Doctor Darpax went over and easily lifted the Andorian first and put her on a biobed, then went to retrieve the Bolian. "Doctor T'Lara, the Petty Officer seems to have passed out."
"You have my apologies Doctor Darpax" T'Lara said as she knelt by the petty officer, taking out the medical Tricorder she tended to keep in the pocket of her lab coat. Having run a quick scan to make sure she would do Ben no injuries by moving him she lifted him onto a nearby biobed - a sight quite astounding for someone uneducated in the comparative strength of Vulcans. Despite her diminutive frame T'Lara was quite the equal in strength to the most powerful human male on the crew.
"That's quite alright, Doctor T'Lara assured the Vulcan woman as she went to attend to the other two patients. "Severe lacerations with one deep puncture and a radiation burn. Easy enough to treat. Do you require assistance?" she asked as she motioned for several nurses and a medic to attend to the others.
"Yes." The screen on the wall above Ben's head lit up with vitals as the bio bed hooked into the new patient. T'Lara checked his oxygen saturation level before looking at her colleague directly.
"He has a broken rib on his left side which has punctured the left lung. Set him up with an oxygen supply and monitor his o2 levels. I shall handle the repair work. If the bone is removed properly and carefully we can avoid a pneumothorax ."
"Of course, Doctor," Doctor Darpax said as she went to get the needed items to oxygenate the young Petty Officer. "Shall I prepare in the event that pneumothorax becomes a complication?"
"Yes." T'Lara certainly wasn't one for mollycoddling her staff with pleasantries when there was urgent work to be done. "The bone is still lodged in place, the position such that once the rib is moved we will have a very short window to affect repairs on the lung." T'Lara inspected some live scans on the bio bed's side screen as she spoke. "We need to keep him under. Introduce some Anesthazane into the O2 supply. If he wakes this will become very complicated very quickly."
Doctor Darpax checked the Petty Officer's weight and medical charts for allergies before she went to retrieve the Anesthazine. She returned a minute later and prepared the dosage before administering it to the oxygen supply. She looked at the scan and nodded. "It's taking effect," she said. "It looks like rib four made a lateral puncture but it isn't very deep. I would hazard a guess that him carrying in the other two personnel didn't help the matter."
The Klingon woman headed back over with a small fleet of nurses and medics who tended to the Bolian and Andorian before they were declared fit to be released. She returned to where the Vulcan woman was with the human Yeoman and cleared her throat. "The other two are ready to be released, Doctor T'Lara," Darpax said. "How is Crewman Efits?"
"Excellent work. He is progressing well." T'Lara had been able to move the bone back to its normal place and had started repairing the internal wound. Satisfied that there was no longer a risk of unwanted air pockets she looked up to hail herself some help.
Nurse Rigby, upon finishing up with another patient, hurried to Dr. T'Lara's side and without even being told, began putting the instruments in order. "Just tell me what you need," she said, automatically readying an osteo regenerator as well as a dermal regenerator.
"Osteo regenerator." T'Lara took the device passed to her and went back to her work. It was a delicate affair to work with the Constant movement of Ben's breathing but it was little challenge to A doctor as seasoned as T'Lara. After a couple of minutes careful work she switched tools again and after another minute of concentration passed it back to Nurse Rigby with a nod.
"Doctor Darpax," she started, Looking up, "please bring him around."
Doctor Darpax came over and pressed a hypospray to the Yeoman's neck and put it aside. "Petty Officer Efits, can you hear me?"
Ben groaned and cracked an eye open. "What happened?" he asked.
"You broke a rib and it punctured your lung," the Klingon woman said.
"Ensign Sh'parthantol objected to me picking her up," the Yeoman groaned. "It was a bit of a struggle before she passed out. Is Lieutenant Feraht okay?"
Rigby busied herself checking the Petty Officer's pulse and blood pressure to make sure he wouldn't pass out on his way out of Sick Bay. There was nothing worse than releasing a patient and having them carried back in a couple minutes later because their blood pressure hadn't sufficiently risen.
Doctor Darpax looked at Nurse Rigby. "Could you assist Ensign Sh'parthantol and Lieutenant Feraht and see if they need anything, please?"
"Of course," answered Rigby, finishing up her checks and making note of them in Efits's charts. She then hurried over to check on the other two.
Ensign Sh'parthantol, the young Andorian Shen, looked sheepish when Rigby came over. "Is the Yeoman I hit okay?" she asked as she sat on the edge of the biobed.
"He's going to be just fine," Rigby replied, performing similar checks on the Andorian. "How are you feeling? Is there anything you need?"
"I'm glad," the Ensign said. "As for me, I feel good as new. Am I cleared to go?"
"Yes, everything appears to be working the way it should," answered Rigby. "If you experience any symptoms, come back immediately." With that, she turned to the Bolian.
Lieutenant Feraht, the Bolian was already on his feet and looked ready to head back to duty as soon as he was cleared and waited on Rigby patiently to be released.
Rigby performed the same checks on him and quickly declared him fit for duty.
Once he was cleared, the Bolian thanked her and headed out with the Andorian close behind. All that was left was Chief Efits, but the diagnosis and recommendation for him was a day of rest since the ship was heading back to Earth and after that, he would be released.
