Mission:
An Orion to Die For
Location: Personal Quarters/First Officer's Office
Timeline: MD1
Origin of the Sioux.
As Nawaji adjusted the print one last time, she wondered if her copy of the Oscar Howe painting might be the one that traveled the furthest from Earth.
Only if I get moving and check in with the Executive Officer, Nawaji thought to herself as she took one last look at the print before exiting her new quarters.
With a couple of minutes to spare, Nawaji arrived at the door of Triumphant's First Officer. She used the time to check her uniform and make sure her ponytail was in place before signaling her presence at the Executive Officer's office door.
Maddy sat inside her office going over the countless reports that continued to keep coming in. There just didn't seem to be enough hours in the day to do everything she needed to get done, but that didn't keep her from trying. The more the XO packed into a single shift (and got done), the less she had to do the following day.
When she heard ime, indicating the presence of someone on the other side of the door, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly. With new crew on board, she could count on this happening a lot over the next few days... not that she minded. Setting the PADD she held in her hand aside, she turned her gaze to the door. "Come in!"
"Commander Weisz?" Nawaji asked as she stepped inside. "Ensign White Hawk. A pleasure, ma'am," she added, extending her hand.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Ensign White Hawk," Maddy said, shaking the young woman's hand with a smile. "Please, have a seat. Can I get you anything before we begin?"
'No, Commander, I'm fine,' Nawaji responded, taking the proffered chair but remaining perched on the seat's edge.
"Then, we'll go ahead and get started," the Commander suggested as she moved to the replicator for a cup of coffee. "Tell me a little bit about yourself Miss Night Hawk. Were you transferred to us, or did you request an assignment on board our ship?"
"My first appointment out of the Academy, Commander. I did put in a request for the Triumphant but so did half of the people I graduated with, so I have to say, I'm surprised to have made the cut," Nawaji said with a hint of a smile playing on her lips.
Maddy smiled as she returned to her chair with her coffee. Once she was settled, she looked at Nawaji. "I heard rumors our ship was a hot item, but I didn't quite believe it until just now. I'm glad you were able to get the assignment you wanted, too. That rarely happens to anyone."
"I was told by a senior chief who ran my floor's PT drills that the best way to get the assignment I really wanted was to request the exact opposite," Nawaji noted dryly. "But my straight forward approach ending up working after all."
The smile still graced the Commander's lips. "Do you have any questions you'd like to ask me? Maybe about your duties... the ship... anything you can think of. If not, like I tell everyone, I'm reachable any time if nothing comes to mind right now."
"To be honest, Commander, I don't think I know enough yet to know what questions to ask. So thank you for the open door police," Nawaji answered sincerely.
"You're quite welcome, Miss Night Hawk," the redhead woman said. "Have you checked in with your department head yet?"
"Ship's computer has me scheduled with him, and a check-in with sickbay as well, Commander," Nawaji answered.
"Then it sounds to me like you're all set. Remember what I did, though. If you have any questions, concerns or anything, don't hesitate to come see me," Maddy said, rising to her feet and extending a hand. "It was a pleasure to meet you, and welcome aboard."
"Aye, Commander, and thank you again," Nawaji replied as she stood up and took the proffered hand.
Maddy shook the young woman's hand and smiled. "You're welcome. I look forward to working with you. Dismissed."
