Due to the elevated dangers associated with starfighter combat, regulations state that all fighter pilots wear Environmental Suits. These protect the pilot in the event of a decompression, which is considerably more likely due to the reduced armour and shielding on the majority of Federation fighters. However, the standard EV suits utilised by Starfleet have a few drawbacks that made it difficult for the Fighter Corps to initially adopt the protocol.
EV suits are designed as a "one size fits all" and made primarily for ease of use rather than utility. This makes sense for the core fleet, if the EV suit is simpler to don and use, training and certification takes less time. This makes them a lot more clunky, and makes utilising the controls in a fighter more difficult. The best example of this is the helmet, which lock on to the upper-torso body shell. This makes getting a seal much easier but prevents articulation, which is a requirement in dogfights where sensor resolution is not high enough to maintain effective manoeuvres while in visual range. The EVSFS 2390 is a pressurised Extra Vehicular Activity suit which addresses these issues.
Feature List:
- Articulated helmet.
Rather than being hard locked against the life support shell, the helmet seals against a collar around the neck. Though it requires a little more fiddling to get a good seal, once sealed the user can more freely look around.
- Wider FOV
The structural supports, visor and shell of the helmet are all made from transparent aluminium. This completely frees up the pilot's field of view and allows for more effective use of peripheral vision..
- Graphene Smart Glass
The helmet is coated in Graphene Smart Glass. This allows the suit to automatically adjust the transparency of the visor to account for the radiation in the external environment. It also interfaces with compatible ships to project a Heads Up Display on the inside of the visor to aid the pilot.
-Life Support Systems
To reduce weight the life support systems in a suit are only good for an hour on their own. Fortunately they easily interface with a starfighters own life support systems. On modern fighters the life support systems on a star fighter are located in the pilot's seat which can be easily detached for extended EVA and ejected with them during a bail out.
-Fitted design
The EVSFS 2390 is a far more fitted suit compared to EV suits. This means that full measurements are required and suits aren't interchangeable between pilots, but makes them far more comfortable and manoeuvrable.
- Inertial Dampeners
Similar to the g-suits of old, the EVSFS 2390 is designed to mitigate g-forces on the body. It does this through integrated inertial dampening fields which negate the majority of acceleration on the body and allows accelerations up to 2500 Gs.
- Thrusters
The EVSFS 2390 comes with small thrusters, giving the user 6 degrees of freedom in zero gravity environments with an maximum acceleration of 1 meter per second. This makes Star Fighter pilots better able to board and inspect ships passing through Federation space, negating the need for additional support craft to assist in the majority of cases.
