Mission:
History
Location: Senior Officer's Gym
Lieutenant Zekori Dosan stepped out of the changing room and walked into the senior officer's gym. He had decided to checkout the recreational facilities available to him. He looked around and walked over to the elliptical bicycle and hopped onboard. He looked down at the screen and his hands skimmed across the interface to see the scenery he could bicycle in. Of course it would have been more immersive on the Holodeck but it wasn't the same. However, he never learned to ride a bicycle as a child, it was a luxury that Bajoran children growing up during the Occupation never got to experience. He smiled when he found a Bajoran country road landscape and selected it.
He put his hands on the handlebars and then rose his feet to the pedals and began to slowly move his feet. He gradually begun to build momentum.
Kelani entered the senior officer’s gym, intent on practicing her fencing, looking forward to the time when she and Logan could have another match with a Holodeck scenario. Seeing the Lieutenant, she inclined her head and smiled at him, then stepped into the changing.
After a few moments Kelani emerged in her fencing gear and moved to the padded area a short distance from the elliptical cycle and began to practice.
The Bajoran was flabbergasted by the woman's appearance after she emerged from the changing room. His eyes followed her to her fencing area. His eyes went back to enjoy the scenery on the Bajoran roads before looking over at her quizzically again. He saw her weapon but was still curious. He slowed down to a light cruise, "Apologies for the interruption. What type of swordplay is this? It was extremely alien to him.
Kelani paused her practice at Zekori’s question. Turning to face him, she said, “It is a very old form of human combat called fencing. It has always fascinated me. At one time many centuries ago on earth it was used quite extensively.” She smiled, asking, “Would you like to learn it? I will be pleased to teach you what I know of it.”
"I do not want to intrude," Zekori replied respectfully.
“It is no intrusion,” Kelani replied with a smile. “Fencing is better with two persons and I would enjoy showing another a sport which I enjoy.”
"Very well," Zekori nodded and reciprocated a smile. He exit out of his ride programme on the elliptical to continue later. He was inclined to join the woman in her sport of fencing. It interested him. He stepped off the elliptical and approached her.
Kelani smiled as she watch Zekori approach. She told him, “It is an elegant sport now, but many centuries ago it was a form of combat on earth. Duels were also fought in this manner....but first of all we must get you into the proper gear—even in sport, injuries may happen.”
Zekori nodded his head, "That's probably a good idea. I don't want to get hurt on the first week on the job." He smiled. "What would I need to get for myself?"
Kelani smiled in her turn, saying, “Come. We must find you a suit such as mine, then a foil—“ and she brandished her own, “then we can begin.”
"I cannot wait to say, "en garde" He grinned as he followed behind her.
Kelani chuckled, saying, “You have heard of fencing, then. That will help, I believe.”
Going to the lockers, she found a suit in Zekori’s size and handed it to him, saying, “By the time you change, I will have a foil for you, and we can begin.”
"Thank you," the Bajoran smiled as he graciously accepted the fencing suit into his bundled into his arms. He waited for her to leave the locker room. He changed into suit and entered the gym proudly. "Ready when you are."
Kelani smiled and handed him the foil that she had found on a rack nearby. “First, I need to show the various moves and explain their uses—then we will begin to practice.”
Zekori took the foil gracefully and held the blade downward for safety. He nodded understandingly as his instructor Kelani went through the various movements and their uses.
Kelani then went through the various moves, explaining their uses. After she finished, she asked,”Are you ready to begin?”
"Yes," Zekori nodded. "Is it okay if I ask questions during practice?"
“Of course,” Kelani answered, smiling slightly. “I would be very surprised if you had no questions—this is a very archaic form of combat”, She saluted him, then moved into Ready position.
Zekori nodded and copied the Lieutenant Commander's poses with her foil, "Ready, when you are."
“Then we will begin,”. Kelani said, continuing with a twinkle in her eye, “En garde” And she advanced on Zekori, her foil flickering, looking for an opening.
Zekori blocked several of her advances but couldn't catch her blade tap poke in in the left shoulder.
Kelani stepped back after her successful touch to Zekori’s shoulder, saying,”That is quite good for a first try....I am impressed.” Again the twinkle came to her eyes as she asked, “Are you sure you have never fenced before?”
"No, I have not." Zekori smiled, "I have a great teacher." He took in a light breathe, "I am ready to continue."
“Then you are a natural,” Kelani replied, moving into the ready position. “We shall certainly continue—-en garde!” And she moved in again...
Zekori deflected her attack and then in snuck in an attack in the process.
Kelani quickly dodged and deflected Zekori’s attack, saying,” Impressive! You truly are a natural—I have not been caught off guard like that in a long time—-“ and she attacked again, faster than before.
"Thank you," Zekori replied as he tried to deflect her quick attack but ended up hitting his gloved hand. He retained his grip on his foil.
Kelani stepped back, smiling. “Excellent!” She told him, “There are very few who can defend against that attack form—and most of them quite experienced. You held your own quite well.” She paused for a moment, then asked, “Shall we take a short break before we continue? I find myself needing a cold beverage...”
The Bajoran nodded his head, "Thank you. I look forward to learning more from you." He grinned. "I could use a cold beverage myself."
Kelani smiled, saying, “Come, then. We shall have our drinks and talk for a while....then if you wish to continue, we will”
Moving to the replicator, she ordered an iced cherry tea, then stood aside and waited while Zekori ordered his drink.
Zekori ordered ice water. He lifted it from the replicator tray and brought it to his lips for a sip.
Kelani stepped over to a nearby bench and seated herself, sipping her tea. She beckoned to Zekori, saying, “Come and relax for a while. I would like to become better acquainted with you.”
"Sounds good to me," the Bajoran nodded his head in agreement. He walked over to the bench, sat down and took a sip of his water. "How long have you been aboard the Triumphant for?"
Kelani took a sip of her tea before replying, saying, “I was here for Triumphant’s maiden voyage—it has been quite an—interesting—posting...never—or very rarely—a dull moment”. She smiled at Zekori, a twinkle in her eyes as she said, “You will soon discover what I mean, I think.”
"I have only been aboard for a short time and I have so far enjoyed my time aboard the Triumphant."
“It is a good ship with good people who are always there for you if you need them,” Kelani replied. “As you will see, I am sure, this crew will become like a family to you—it has for me."
"Something to look forward to."
“Indeed,” Kelani replied, then took the last sip of her tea. “Shall we continue? Or must you go on duty soon?”
"I believe I should head back to the bridge," Zekori answered. "I would really like to fence with you again."
“Of course,” Kelani replied, rising and returning her cup to the replicator. “I should probably return to my duties as well. I look forward to a rematch.” She told him with a smile.
Zekori followed her over to the replicator to return his cup. He took a final drink of his cold water to finish the glass, "Let me know when you'd like to reschedule."
“Of course,” Kelani replied with a smile. “I look forward to it. There are not many on Triumphant who enjoy fencing.”
The Bajoran smiled, "Certainly. Hopefully see you soon."
He placed his glass on the replicator tray along with her drink. He pressed the button to dismantle the glassware. He stepped away, nodding his head to her with a smile and left for the change room to change into his uniform.
Kelani also placed her glass in the replicator, inclining her head in acknowledgement, then moved to the changing area as well—there was much to do....
