Mission:
Refits and Reviews
Location: Medical
Timeline: MD 2 || 2330 Hours
Michael lay on the operating biobed and took a breath as he watched Doctor Armitage prepare everything that he'd need to operate on him. "Have you ever done this before, Doctor?" he asked as other specialists came in to confer with Armitage before leaving again.
“I’ve assisted beforehand which is why Mr. Sorvik is here with me,” Doctor Armitage tapped a few buttons to bring up the holographic imagery of the Commodore’s brain.
"That's reassuring," Michael said. "What's it look like, Doctor?"
"You've got a golf-ball size of a tumour," the Doctor replied at an attempt of humour.
If he knew what a golf ball was, Michael doubted that he'd be amused. "Let's get this over with," he said.
"Indeed," Doctor Armitage looked down at the Commodore, "Now we can't put you under. We need you to be awake. Please watch the screen and keep talking with us and let us know what you see on the screen." Armitage pointed and an image came on, "we will give you something so you don't feel any pain."
"I would hope not," Michael said.
Meanwhile, Sorvik had loaded up a hypo with something and was preparing the medical instruments. "Ready, Doctor," he said as he handed him the hypospray.
Doctor Armitage took the hypospray from Sorvik and injected its contents into the Commodore's shoulder. He handed the hypospray back his assistant, "You should feel a numbness throughout your body in approximately fifteen seconds. Please let me know when you feel the agent kicking in."
Michael felt an odd numbness spread from his shoulder to his neck and down toward his torso. His jaw and lips started to get numb and his vision got hazy. "No....good," he mumbled as he tried to sit up, one hand shaking badly where it gripped the edge of the bed.
Sorvik merely studied a tricorder and barely glanced at the Commodore. "It'll be fine, Sir," he said.
The Doctor brought up an image on the screen, "What do you see on the screen, Commodore?" Armitage looked over to Sorvik for his tools.
"Ish blurrry," Michael slurred and fell back on the biobed. His legs arched and he tried to use them to push himself off of the biobed.
Doctor Armitage tried to restrain the Commodore from flopping from the table with his hands. He looked over at,"What did you give him, Lieutenant Sorvik?"
"A standard dose of Neurozine," Sorvik responded. "He seems to be resisting it. I would suggest that the tumor is more advanced than thought."
"Hold still Commodore or I will have to restrain you," Armitage struggled to tap his commbadge, "Doctor Armitage to Nurse Blake. Please report to Surgery One."
Michael's thrashing slowed and the biobed's medical computer indicated that his lungs were starting to fail.
Armitage grabbed the tricorder from the Vulcan forcibly and began to ran his own scan on the Doctor. It revealed that the Vulcan had given him Tetrodotoxin, "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK SORVIK?"
Armitage continued to struggle with the Commodore. He screamed for the nurse.
The moment she heard the doctor scream for a nurse, Dani dropped what she was working on and ran to the operating room. It definitely had to be an emergency, and the petite woman was doing her best to mentally prepare herself for whatever she was about to run in on. "What is it, doctor?" she asked, trying to catch her breath, but saw the Commodore on the table and knew that would have to wait.
Dani immediately sprang into action, still unsure what was going on, but it was clear their fearless leader was in distress. A glance to the biomonitor told her all she needed to know. His lungs were paralyzed, and that meant he wasn't breathing on his own any longer. Without hesitation, she ran to an area of the room where emergency equipment was kept and returned with a ventilator. Sure, they could give him medication, but that would take time. Time they didn't have.
The petite woman, who was surprisingly strong for her size, moved to the head of the bed and set to work. Once the ventilator was in place, she activated the machine and turned her eyes toward the monitor to look for signs of change.
The biomonitor indicated that while his lungs were now on a respirator, it also indicated that his other organs were starting to fail.
When the petite nurse came running in, Sorvik turned and ran out of the operating room with a hypospray in one hand and a laser scalpel in the other.
Armitage looked over at Daniella, "I was hoping to meet you under better circumstances Nurse Blake but thank you for coming to my aid." He didn't give her a chance to respond right away. He tapped his commbadge, "Sickbay to Security. Please send security to Main Sickbay immediately. Doctor Sorvik just made an attempt on the Commodore's life. He is armed and dangerous." Armitage ran to the pharmaceutical dispensary and ordered the medication to cancel out the tetrodotoxin.
Dani, who was still oblivious to what the hell was actually wrong with the Captain, jumped onto the biobed Michael was laying on and straddled his midsection. He was flatlining, and wasn't about to die on her watch. Today or any other. He was her main focus right now, so conversation with the doctor would have to wait until the Commodore was out of the woods. With a look of determination, the petite woman placed her hands over his sternum and began chest compressions. If his heart wasn't going to beat on its own, she'd help it along until they could get him stabilized. "What in the ever loving hell is going on!?" she demanded after a five count.
Armitage inserted a new hypospray into the dispensary for the antitoxin. He placed the hypospray away for evidence against Sorvik. He frowned as he immediately ran over to deliver the antitoxin into the Commodore's system.
The antitoxin began to circulate through Michael's body right as the biomonitor indicated that the Commodore just flatlined. The lights along the edge of Medical turned blue and flashed for a Code Blue. As the toxin was purged from his body and the efforts of the tiny nurse, his heart beat once, then again, stuttered and began to beat again. He gasped for air and fought to move his limbs without knowing what was going on.
"He's coming to!" Dani cried, still in her position above the Commodore, though she was no longer doing compressions. She gently took her CO's face into her hands and held him so he could look at her. "Commodore, you're okay, but I need for you to try to remain calm and keep your movements to a minimum. You're on a ventilator at the moment, and until we're sure you're okay breathing on your own, it has to stay where it is. Keep looking at me." She cast a quick glance to the doctor. "You can run any necessary scans on him to make sure whatever that was is gone now." And still, she was clueless.
Michael would have spoken, but started to gag when he realized that there was an intubator covering his mouth and breathing for him. He pointed at it and then tried to turn his head to look at the biomonitor.
The Doctor looked over at the biomonitor. He took in a deep breathe that his condition had stabilized, "Doctor Sorvik isn't who he seemed, Commodore. Would you like to move on with the surgery?"
"One moment," the petite nurse said, removing herself from Michael's midsection. Dani removed the ventilator with a few instructions for him as she did so, then moved it off to the side. "Try to say something simple for me, please."
"Spencer..." Michael said.
"Is in the waiting room," Dani assured him. "Would you like to see her for a moment before Doctor Armitage begins?"
"No," Michael said. "Let's do this."
"Yes, Commodore." Armitage nodded as he properly administered the correct drug. He looked over to the Head Nurse, "I need you to sit on this with me, Lieutenant. There isn't anyone I can trust currently."
Dani nodded her head. It was tough being able to trust others when something so horrible happened, but she would never do anything to mess up her career, and definitely not to Michael. She respected the man far too much to do anything like that to him. "I'll stay, Doctor," she assured him.
"Thank you," Armitage nodded. "I'll need you to have him stay focus on the imaging on the screen and watching his vitals."
"I've got it covered, Doctor," she said, looking toward Michael. "Commodore, if you could look to the screen in front of you, the doctor will be able to begin the procedure."
Michael did as he was told once the correct aesthetic was given to him and began to feel drowsy once again, but without the paralyzing effects.
Out in the waiting room, Spencer found herself on her feet pacing back and forth. They hadn't left her all that long ago, but for her, it may as well have been an eternity. What if something went wrong? What if her husband was never the same again? There were so many 'what if' questions plaguing her at the moment, but there was nothing else for her to focus on. It was painfully clear to herself, and those who happened to notice her, that waiting was going to cause her major stress. After all, it wasn't every day her husband had to have brain surgery to remove a tumor, but it explained so much. Her hope now was that he came out of this feeling better than he had in years.
Spencer blinked. She heard the call to Security, as well as the mention there was an attempt on her husband's life. Oh. Hell. No. She was pissed, and the person she was pissed at was still in sickbay somewhere. He was going to pay dearly for trying to take her husband from her, and there wasn't a soul alive that would be able to stop her. After all, it would take Security time to arrive.
Sorvik came running out of the operating theater with the hypospray in his left hand and the laser scalpel in his right. He shoved a male Bolian nurse into a cart loaded with instruments and headed for the exit of the waiting room.
Blue eyes flew to the man who was trying to escape. With a low growl in her throat, she charged forward and lowered her upper body right before launching herself into his midsection. This was no sparring exercise. This was her wishing to cause pain. There was no pulling her weight. No going easy.
The Vulcan wasn't a big man, but he was a strong man and he still got taken off his feet by the blonde woman who apparently decided that logic only got in the way of introductions. Not that he would have stopped to introduce himself, and he was already running late for his planned exit. Now he was on the floor and grabbing for the hypospray that had went flying when he was tackled and trying to figure out where the crazy woman was.
Spencer knocked the hypospray and laser scalpel away from his hands. "You!" she spat, her eyes blazing with anger. "You tried to kill my husband!"
Sorvik grabbed her wrist and began to squeeze with his Vulcan strength and yanked her towards him. "Stupid human, you're next!" He drew back his other fist and swung for her head hard.
Her eyes went wide as she saw the fist moving for her head. There was little time to react, but she was able to get her free arm up to block the blow. A sickening crack filled the air as the bone snapped in half. A cry of pain escaped her lips. She hadn't planned on breaking anything today, but between the block and what he was doing to her other wrist, she would be in need of medical attention herself before this was all over. "Then do it, you traitorous piece of shit!" she said, preparing to send a blow of her own his way.
It was at that moment that three Security personnel entered the room. One of them, the lead of this particular team, moved to the Captain while the other two moved toward Sorvik. As they moved, one of them fired a phaser, set on stun, at Sorvik intending to knock him out or at least slow him down.
When he reached Spencer, he spoke calmly. "Ma'am, thank you for keeping him here, but we will take him now if that's all right with you." He could see that she was angry -- and she did outrank him by a good margin -- so he was being polite until and unless she forced him to be otherwise.
"No, thank you," Spencer said, offering the Security officer a smile even though she was in a huge amount of pain. She'd need to get her arm taken care of... both of them... before she saw her husband again. "I know I probably shouldn't have interfered, but the second he got loose on the ship is the second this entire situation turned more dangerous for you and the rest of the crew."
The Security officer nodded. "It's all right, ma'am. You minimized the risk to the ship, but took a great risk yourself. Do you need any help?" Meanwhile, the other two had picked Sorvik up off the ground and had started to half carry, half drag him away to the Brig.
"Yes, please," the blonde haired woman said, extending her hand for help up. "I'm pretty sure my arm is broken, and I'm in a great deal of pain. Do you think you can help me to a biobed?"
The man took her hand and helped her to her feet. "Of course, ma'am." he said, guiding her into the main sickbay and to one of the biobeds. She seemed okay to walk on her own, so he had not put an arm around her to give physical support. He had walked very close to her, however, in case that assessment had been inaccurate and he had to catch her. As they reached the biobed, he asked, "Do you need help up, ma'am?" Most people lifted themselves up onto these beds by using both arms, and one of hers was injured.
Spencer wasn't normally one who asked for help, but she was sure one arm was broken, while the other had been less injured from the pressure of Sorvik squeezing it. She nodded her head. "Please, if you wouldn't mind. I can't use either one of my arms right now without causing unwanted pain."
James Farrell, the Security Officer who had to this point been assisting the former Commander, would not have even considered touching her without her permission. But having been given said permission, he stepped in front of her. Taking hold of her hips, he lifted her up and stepped forward simultaneously so that her butt was now suspended above the bed by an inch. He set her down again and stepped back respectfully. "I'll get one of the doctors, Ma'am." he said quietly as he began to look around for someone to help her.
"Thank you," the former Commander said, trying to keep the pain she felt at bay. Nothing short of fixing both of her arms would do that, though.
Farrell smiled over his shoulder at her. "You're welcome, Ma'am." he answered, though he felt he was just doing his job, watching out for the safety of the crew. Still, it felt good that she had bothered to show gratitude; so many didn't, though it was likely just an oversight. Catching a nurse, he stopped them momentarily. "Excuse me. Is there someone who can take a look at Mrs. Aravan?"
"I can!" a cheerful male medic said as he came over with a hypospray and a tricorder. "Oh! Missus Aravan!" he bubbled and then tuned it down a notch as he scanned her arm and then her torso. "Looks like a nasty break, but the babies are fine, hun." He adjusted the hypo and pressed it to her neck for the pain, then stood back to let it get to work. He reached for a bone regenerator after scanning her arm again, quietly humming to himself.
"Thank you, William," the Commodore's wife said as she allowed him to do what he needed to. Spencer hoped Michael would never find out what she'd done, because she knew he'd be angry. However, there was no way she'd be able to live with herself had Sorvik gotten loose in the ship. "And I'm glad the babies are fine. I know what I did was incredibly stupid, but I couldn't let that lunatic get away."
"Just remember that we have Security swarming all over this ship," William said as he began to treat her broken arm. "They're there for a reason."
Spencer nodded her head. "And they weren't here yet, so I did what anyone would have done in my position."
"You mean trip him when he ran by and then beat him with a tray of instruments?" William lightly joked.
"I could have been hurt even worse if I would have tripped him," she pointed out. "He could have fallen on me, done some damage with the laser scalpel he had, or a number of other things. I did what I felt was right at the time. No one has to agree with me."
Tag William
It wasn't long before the doors to the operating room opened and another nurse walked in. "Doctor, Sorvik has been apprehended and is currently on his way to the brig. We did have an injury as a result, however, she is okay now," the woman said.
Doctor Armitage looked over at the nurse. He gestured her over to move in closely. With some concern he inquired, "It wasn't Mrs. Aravan was it?"
"It was," William said. "But her arm and the babies are just fine. Thankfully."
Dani frowned, looking toward Michael before turning her attention back to William. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," William said.
"Spencer was hurt?" Michael asked and tried to sit up before realizing he was still under the effects of the medication that they had given him for his surgery. "The babies? Her arm? Where was Security?" he growled.
"Sir, you need to calm down," Dani said, urging him back down to the bed gently. She couldn't let him get up. Not after the surgery he'd just had. There was a recovery period, and he definitely hadn't met the requirements yet. "Warrant Officer Fontaine said they're all okay, and Sorvik is now in custody. Try not to get yourself worked up. The biomonitor is all over the place right now. And, until we know for sure you're going to be okay, we won't be able to let her in to see you."
The Commodore took a deep breath and would have left right then and there, but he was still in no shape to get out of bed, let alone hand Security their ass on a platter. "When can I see her?"
"Once we get you to your room, I'll have her come to you," Dani promised, checking his vitals once more.
"Thank you," Michael said as his eyes drifted closed against his will and this time, there was no resisting the sleep that his body needed.
