Michael headed down to Deck twenty-two and immediately spotted the Caern/Betazoid hybrid who ran his Science department. She was surrounded by a group of officers and as he approached, several saw him and gave a nod in his direction.
Kelani saw Michael approaching and excused herself. Moving toward Michael, she said, "Good day Commodore. How may I help you?"
"Good morning, Lieutenant," Michael said. "I'm just here for a little inspection. Do you have a couple minutes to give me an update on Science and the progress of the department as a whole?"
“Of course, Commodore,” Kelani replied as she led him to her office. “I am in the process of setting up the research team to study the contamination problem on the Ambassador’s home. Is there anything specific that concerns you?”
"Not in particular at this moment other than what we're going to be facing," Michael said. "Have you gotten with Lieutenant Luvol yet for the effort to what we'll be heading into?"
"Not as of yet, unfortunately,” Kelani replied, continuing, “I am going to consult with the Lieutenant in short order.” She moved to another area where numerous consoles were in operation, continuing, “I have been overseeing the initiation of simulations of possible neutralizing agents for the damage done to the soil on the Romulan planet.” She sighed, saying, “It is unfortunate that the Ambassador could not bring a soil sample—we could analyze it and be well on the way to finding the neutralization element....we will work on it constantly, however.”
"What we need is a cure to whatever the Romulans used on the people," the Commodore said. "The soil will be worthless if everyone on the planet dies."
"My apologies, Commodore,". Kelani replied. " We will set up additional simulations to find an antidote." She paused for a moment, then asked, "Did the Ambassador make any mention of the symptoms of the victims? That would help narrow the search."
Michael shook his head. "Not that I'm aware of but I would suggest you get with the Ambassador and Lieutenant Luvoll and try to get some ideas of what you'll be dealing with."
“I will do so as soon as may be,” Kelani replied. “Thank you for your observations and suggestions, Commodore.”
She looked around the department for a moment, then turned back to Michael, asking, “Is there any other issue we should be aware of and working on a solution for?”
"None that I can think of, but your simulations for the environment may come in handy as well," he said. "After all, what good is living people without a planet to live on?"
“A very good point, Commodore,” Kelani replied with a small smile. “We will continue our researches and I will consult with the Ambassador and Lieutenant Luvol as soon as may be.”
"Then I'll leave you to it, Lieutenant," Michael said. "If you have any needs, feel free to contact me or Captain Weisz." He gave her a nod, turned and headed out.
