Say What!?

Posted on Sun Dec 10, 2017 @ 1:35am by Commodore Michael Aravan & Warrant Officer William Fontaine & Spencer Aravan

Mission: Falling Star
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD 32 || 1100 Hours

Spencer made her way into sickbay after dropping her little ones off at school. She felt fine... fantastic, in fact, but it was time for her to go through with her checkup. Why was it such a common thing for everyone to dislike them so much? It wasn't like the Medical staff was unpleasant, but for some reason she just couldn't seem to put her finger on it. Maybe someday, the mystery would be cleared up, but for now, she had more important things to take care of.

The tall blonde made her way into the rather large Medical complex and took a look around. There was the usual hustle going on inside, but the former Commander didn't take note of any serious injuries. That was something she liked to see. It meant they weren't in any kind of danger, and the crew was being mindful of what they were doing and not hurting themselves.

Scanning the main facility, her eyes landed on a familiar face, and a smile formed on her lips as she approached him. "Mister Fontaine... it's been far too long. How have you been?"

The darked hair Medical officer turned at the sound of his voice being called and his eyes lit up. "As I live and breathe if it isn't Commander Spencer Aravan! Or is it? I heard some scuttlebutt in the back corridors, but I'd never believe the horse's mouth or the horse's ass until I have proof in my hands."

"I'm good, can't complain. You?" William gestured towards a biobed. "What can I help you with, Sweetie?"

"It's true. I retired just before my son was born," the former Commander replied as she settled onto the biobed. "I've been pretty good, too. The kids have been keeping me busy, but I love that I get to spend so much time with them now. They deserve to have that. As for why I'm here, I just need a checkup... make sure all my meds are working alright."

"Retired? You? Oh dear. Who's keeping the Commodore in line?" he asked as he activated the biobed. "Standard checkup? I don't do them from the neck up but I do have a good ear, or so I'm told."

"Captain Weisz keeps him in line in duty," Spencer replied with a grin. "And she does a damn good job, too. As for a check up from the neck up, I don't think I need one of those just yet."

William began the standard scan of her and smiled. "I'll bet she is," he said as he waited for the results. "My Mama always told me that redheads eat people that make them angry."

Spencer couldn't help but grin. "She would be right, too. Maddy takes no crap, and just because Michael outranks her doesn't keep her from telling him how it is."

"Isn't that what an Executive Officer is supposed to do?" he asked before he glanced at the monitors. "Heart rate is good, blood pressure is good, digestion is good. Hmm. Estrogen levels are unusually high, though. Have you been stressed more than usual lately or eating foods that increase estrogen levels?" He gave her a list of foods that would cause it in women.

"Um... no, not that I know of. Things have been relatively smooth," she replied with a look of confusion on her face. The former Commander had no idea why her estrogen levels would be increased. "Is there some kind if medication I can take that will fix it?"

"Let's rule out what it's not before we prescribe anything for it," William said as he set the scanner to check for ovarian or adrenal tumors. When those came back negative, he frowned. "I have to check two more things," he said as he pulled up her medical file. "Hmm. That's not it. You have your shot on time, but it never hurts."

He started one more scan and then stopped as his jaw dropped and he looked at it again.

A wave of panic surged through her. "William... what is it? What's wrong?"

William turned to her beaming. "Nothing's wrong, Spencer. You're going to be a mommy again!"

"That's not even remotely funny, William. There's no way I'm pregnant. Michael and I get our shots every month to keep it from happening," she said with a frown. "My last pregnancy was very high risk, and that's exactly why we decided having more was off the table." Well... she decided.

"Oh, I'm not being funny," he said. "And I have more news for you. You're going to have twins."

Spencer opened her mouth and closed it again, only to repeat the process a few times before she stopped. The color drained from her face as dizziness began to set in. In fact, it was a good thing she was already sitting down. That meant she didn't have far to fall as she fainted, collapsing against the biobed she was settled on with a thud.

"Why do they always do that?" William asked himself as he prepared a light stimulant to bring her awake and pressed it to her neck.

It didn't take long before she was stirring around. "We took our shots," she whispered in disbelief.

"Just a moment, Spencer," he said before he accessed Michael's Medical records, then tutted. "I normally wouldn't give out this information, but you're his wife. He missed a shot while he was on shore leave."

"He... did?" she asked, looking up to him from her new position of laying down. There were so many things running through her mind at the moment, but Spencer found she couldn't focus on any of them. Her life was officially in danger again, and now the lives of not one... but two babies were also.

The biobed immediately showed an increase in her heart rate and a spike in her blood pressure as the reality of the situation began to set in. While the thought of having two new babies to spoil excited her, the worry and uncertainty that they would all make it through this, kept her from being able to show it. "I... I need to go. I have to... I don't know. I just have to go." She pushed herself up to a sitting position before she got to her feet and started toward the exit as if on autopilot. "I'll come back in a day or so."

"Spencer, wait!" William called out as he went after her. "I have a list of things to go over with you and your checkup isn't completed yet."

"Like I said... I'll come back. I just... I just need to be by myself for a little while. Thank you," she said, giving him a halfhearted smile before making her way out of the facility and into the corridor.

Spencer was off in her own little world, bumping into people and muttering an apology as she made her way forward aimlessly. She was pregnant again. With twins. That part wasn't all that surprising given that she was a twin herself, but the fact she was pregnant again... that was a major shock to her system.

"Oh bloody hell...the other thing they do," William said as he grabbed a medkit and a couple ampules he'd need before he went after her again. "At least take this with you," he called to her as he went around several people who had confused looks on their faces at the Commodore's wife's actions.

"Thank you," she said, accepting the medkit and ampules from him. "Send me a message with the instructions, and I'll follow them without question. And I promise you that I'll return tomorrow. I need to send my husband a message and ask him to pick the kids up when he's off duty."

"I will," he said. "Do you want me to walk you back to your quarters?" he asked, suddenly getting images in his head of her walking into Marine Country or somewhere else instead of her quarters.

"No, no. I can get there on my own, but I appreciate the offer," Spencer said. She managed another half smile and made her way toward the turbolift that would take her to her the deck her quarters were on. The entire journey was one she couldn't quite remember. In fact, she didn't even recall making her way inside.

The former Commander set the medkit and ampules down on the table before she moved to the terminal and powered it one. It was only after taking a seat did she begin to compile a message to her husband.

Michael,

I'm going to ask my sister to pick the kids up from school for me. Will you pick them up from her when you're off duty? She knows your schedule is pretty crazy right now, so if they have to stay a little longer, it won't be a problem. I need a little time to myself.

Love you,

Spencer

She hit send and put the terminal on standby, then looked around before making her way into the bedroom.

A few minutes later, her terminal dinged to indicate a message.

Spencer,

I'll get them as soon as I get off duty. I'm in the middle of inspections at the moment, but I'll be done by the time they get out of school. Is everything okay?

Love,

Michael

From the bedroom, she heard the terminal ding, but just couldn't bring herself to answer it. Spencer grabbed her PADD off of her nightstand to shoot Piper a quick message, then she settled down in bed. What she needed was sleep. After that, maybe she'd be able to regroup and make sense of everything.
