Shipboard Security

Posted on Tue Feb 6, 2018 @ 6:44am by Lieutenant Colonel S'er'in'e & Lieutenant Commander Arrda

Mission: Falling Star
Location: Marine Country
Timeline: MD 32 || 1100 Hours

Directly following the briefing, Douglas had gone to his office to check that everything was moving along as he had instructed. His people knew their jobs, and were performing admirably so far, so he left things to his second and headed down to Marine Country to speak to the Colonel about collaboration.

Reaching the appropriate deck, he got off the 'Lift, nodded to the marine on guard there, and headed to their commander's office. In some ways, walking through here was like walking through an Enforcer facility, and it made him just a bit nostalgic. but he pushed that aside and made his way to the office, tapping the chime for entry.

S'er'in'e was in his office catching up with the events that he'd missed on during his recovery. The Major had taken care of things well enough and it was that he was reviewing mostly for his own information. He was brought out of his thought process by the door chime. "Enter." Wondering who it might be he stood up and focused his new eyes on the door.

Douglas tapped the key that opened the doors and stepped into the office when bidden to do so. "Good morning, Colonel." he offered as the doors hissed shut behind him. "You look well." Yes, he had come here for business, but that did not mean that he could not show some kindness and/or courtesy beforehand.

"Lieutenant." S'er'in'e greeted, it was not often they saw fleet officers down on this deck. "You are here regarding the earlier meeting with the Commodore that Major Petrova sat in on my behalf." He lifted his hand to offer a chair. "Patrolling the ship with our departments I believe?"

Noting the Caitian's preference to move straight to business, Douglas took the offered seat and nodded. "Indeed. The commodore wants us to work together during this mission, and I thought it would be a good idea for us to meet and work out the details."

"I was not at the meeting as you know, perhaps you could brief me on the particulars of the mission and what our collaboration is about?" It was not that he questioned his Mate's notes that she'd left for him but if he was to work with the Lieutenant then perhaps from the man himself would cast more light on the situation.

Douglas considered the Caitian for a moment. Since the marine's XO had been in the meeting, it was likely that the man already knew what this was about. So why ask him? Perhaps it was a test; Goddess knew he had tested enough of his subordinates in his career. But he was not a marine, so...

The answer was simplicity itself, really. He was being assessed. It was most likely the other Department Head wanted to get a feel for his counterpart in Security, see a glimpse of what made him tick. Douglas could certainly understand that; he would like the same really. Knowing about Caitians did not tell him about S'er'in'e any more than knowing about Humans told him about Commodore Aravan.

Settling into the chair, Douglas went over the mission and their part in it with clarity and detail but not to the extent that he sacrificed efficiency. He finished with, "And that brings us to now. I am aware that Marines and Security tend to do things differently, so I wanted to work out a plan with you that would, hopefully, serve both and, by extension the ship, well."

"As I'm to understand we need to secure the ship, against what is unknown as far as I'm aware but the tasking has been handed down to us. You are right in your view that our departments work differently, with that in mind to avoid confusion and any potential friction between mixed groupings I would suggest we split the ship in half. Since the marines are on the lower sections it would be prudent if we handled that half." S'er'in'e called up his holographic table to represent the ship and then a green highlight to fill the lower half of the ship.

"With Security coordinating the securing of the upper half we can link our control faculties together so that we both have real-time information and coordination of mobile elements." The link would be easy to establish; and with real-time readings coming in, it would be possible for one or both to anticipate an action and react accordingly.

"It makes sense." Douglas offered after a moment of silent consideration. "You and I will need to keep in close contact as well so that we don't accidentally interfere with each other's commands." he added thoughtfully. It was possible that a situation might be spotted by both of them; and if they did not know what the other intended, they might step on one another's toes.

"Which is why I suggested linking our department interfaces. It would permit us to monitor the locations of our respective patrol teams, patterns and also coordinate should a situation arise. Since as security you have control of force fields it comes particularly useful for herding an opponent to where we want them or towards a superior defensive force." S'er'in'e replied having used the same tactic on a few occasions in his past.

Douglas frowned, mostly at himself. Was he that unclear about his precise meaning? Obviously, he was. He decided to try being more clear. "I understand that will allow us both to be aware of the situation at the same time. However, we may not both be watching the same situation at the same time. Given that we are separating the ship in half, it is a fair bet that we will, in fact, be watching different places on the interfaces. That being the case, one of us might spot a problem that would affect the other before the second one sees it. For this, we need a way to alert the other party. And that form of communication should be separate from the normal internal comm. system -- which could have been compromised -- and tightly secured." He hoped that was a clearer explanation of his thoughts.

"I don't see a problem with setting up an immediate action alert system." S'er'in'e replied. "It would aid in our work." S'er'in'e concluded. "Unless there is anything else I suggest we get to work swiftly to ensure the security of the ship."

Douglas nodded, glad that they were on the same page. "Agreed. I will contact you when I return to my office, and we can begin setting it all up." He stood as he spoke, offering a respectful nod before turning to leave.

S'er'in'e watched the officer leave and as soon as the doors closed he began his work to link the two departments while his staff arranged everything for the patrolling squads.
