Work Experience

Posted on Tue Aug 23, 2016 @ 11:31pm by Elsie Cusack & Piper Aravan

Mission: An Orion to Die For
Location: The Black Hole
Timeline: MD 0 || 1230 hours

Elsie had been to the medical bay and was now feeling better after having a slight temperature when she woke up that morning. Her adoptive mother Martha Cusack had told her that she had managed to organise some work for her thanks to Captain Aravan. She entered The Black Hole full of confidence and went looking for the manager. Elsie saw a woman standing behind the bar and waited for a moment to check that she was presentable before heading over to the bar. Before speaking she gave a smile.

"Hello. I'm Elsie - the Captain told my mum - Lieutenant Cusack - there might be some work for me here" Elsie said.

Piper Aravan, the owner, looked up from going over their current inventory with a smile. If she did the calculations right, and she was more than sure she did, they'd be good to go for a while before needing to restock on anything. "Hi, Elsie. I'm Piper, the owner of The Black Hole. Do you have an experience in this particular field?" she asked, gesturing for her to come toward the bar and have a seat.

Elsie smiled and took the seat that was offered.

"Hello Piper. I've never worked anywhere before - but I can cook lots of different types of food. My mum and her wife say my food is really good - and I really like speaking to other people" Elsie replied.

"I normally handle a great deal of the cooking myself with a second person taking over once my shift ends, but that doesn't mean I won't let you work in the kitchen," Piper said, signing off on the inventory PADD. Nothing was missing, which pleased her, so they'd be good to go for a while. "How would you like to split your shift between waiting tables so you can get to know people, then use the other half to help out in the kitchen?"

Elsie smiled. She was pleased that Piper seemed happy to give her a chance at proving her worth - and that she was also going to get to work doing both of the things she enjoyed doing. It seemed like an opportunity that was far too good to refuse. Especially so soon after arriving aboard the Triumphant. She smiled before replying.

"I'd really like that. Thank you" Elsie replied.

"You're welcome," the brunette woman said with a smile. "I'm more than happy to help out when and where I can, and I could definitely use more help around here since we're open twenty-four hours. What shift would you prefer? Alpha, Beta or Gamma? I normally pull Alpha and half of Beta, then Lars come on to take the rest of Beta and all of Gamma."

Elsie liked how Piper was so accommodating - she was happy to work whenever she was needed although she was still hoping that she'd be able to spend time with her mothers. Even so if there was any overtime she'd still be more than happy to accept it.

"Well my parents both work on Alpha shift so I was thinking I worked at the same time as then - but if there's ever a time you need some extra help I'd be happy to come and help out" Elsie replied.

"Alpha shift it is, then, and if I ever need any help, I'll definitely keep you in mind," Piper said, offering the young woman a smile. "We're not officially set to reopen until tomorrow morning, though, so that will be your official start time. If you ever have any issues with patrons or other employees, don't hesitate to let me know about it so it can be handled accordingly."

Elsie smiled and made a mental note that she would be working from 08:00 to 16:00. She was really pleased that she had found a job so soon - although that was no thanks to Martha putting a good word in for her.

"Thank you so much. Is there anything you need me to do before I start tomorrow?" Elsie asked.

"Fill this out for me if you wouldn't mind," the brunette said, thumbing through the PADD until she came to what she wanted. She set it down on the bar top, then turned it so Elsie could have been access to it. "Your schedule won't change unless it's absolutely necessary, and I'll make sure to give you ample warning ahead of time so you won't be caught off guard." She looked thoughtful for a minute. "We also serve the real deal when it comes to alcohol here, so I might have to send the bartender to your tables to serve alcoholic beverages. It's more of a comfort thing for me than anything else."

Elsie smiled and looked at the PADD. She began to fill out the details as requested and listened to Piper as she explained her shift patterns. She was happy to work as and when and wherever she was needed - she'd always been keen to help out in any way she possibly could.

"That's fine. I'll have to bake a cake for you to take home to see what you think of it - if you like it maybe we could sell it here too" Elsie replied.

Once she finished the form she needed to fill in she passed the PADD back over to Piper with a smile.

"I think that's everything" Elsie said.

Piper shook her head with a smile. "Nope, I think that about covers it. I'll get a few shirts to you before tomorrow morning, though."

"That's great. I'm really grateful for the opportunity" Elsie said.

Elsie extended her hand to Piper and couldn't wait to go off and tell her parents about her new job. It was an exciting time for her and she couldn't wait to show what she was capable of. In less than a day's time she'd be mid way through her first ever shift in her very first job.

Taking Elsie's hand, Piper shook it with a smile. "You're very welcome, Elsie, and I look forward to working with you. Go tell your parents the good news. I've got a couple orders I need to fill for the Captain."

"I'll see you tomorrow morning" Elsie replied with a smile.

Elsie could barely contain her excitement as she almost ran out of The Black Hole to go and find Martha and Lucia - although she remembered they'd still be on shift for a while yet - so she decided to go and pass the time by sorting out their belongings for them before they came off shift. It would definitely be a double celebration for the Cusack family that evening.
