Medically Sound

Posted on Mon Jun 12, 2017 @ 7:54pm by Ensign Holly Meadows & Commodore Michael Aravan

Mission: Shore Leave
Location: Sickbay, Deck 7
Timeline: MD 13 || 0900 Hours

Lieutenant JG Boxwain finished doing the inventory of medical supplies that were being sent aboard the massive ship and sat the last PADD down. Since Lieutenant T'Lara had elected to go on shore leave for the time being, Boxwain was in charge of Medical and hoped that the crazy EMH didn't come back while she was on duty.

The cute brunette human went over to a console to submit the report, then checked on the new arrivals that had been sent to replace the ones killed by the entity that had came from the probe they picked up. She shook her head sadly; one of them had been a close friend of hers and she was angry that it had happened at all.

Holly checked her appearance for the third time in the long mirror. She wanted to look smart and efficient...which she did...before making her way to the sickbay and introducing herself to the CMO.
She wasn't on a duty rota for a couple of days but all the same, she wanted to have a look at the place where she would be spending the greater part of her time.

Boxwain turned to see a Medical officer enter Sickbay and gave her a smile. "Hi," she said. "I'm Lieutenant Boxwain, the temporary Assistant Chief here. Can I help you with something, Ensign?" she asked politely.

Holly smiled back.
"Yes please. I hope so." she replied. " I'm looking for the CMO, Lieutenant T'Lara? I'm new to the ship." she added.

"She's on shore leave at the moment, but I can help you," Boxwain said. "Let me just pull your record up." She switched from her report to the personnel roster and went through the names. "What is your name, Ensign?"

""Meadows." Holly replied. " Holly." She glanced around as her companion tapped away taking note of what was visible.

"Welcome to the Triumphant, Ensign Meadows," Boxwainer said as she pulled up the record. "I see this is your first assignment. That's impressive as your medical background. Have you already had your physical?" She asked.

The surrounding areas were filled with biobeds, the CMO's office in the back, diagnostic equipment, state-of-the-art scanners, entrances to labs and other things that were out of sight.

"Thank you and no I haven't." Holly replied. "I came to introduce myself and to find out about that and duty and so on. Do you make the appointment or is there someone else I should ask?"

"I can take care of it right now," the brunette ACMO said with a smile. "As for scheduling, Lieutenant T'Lara would be the one to do that, but we have a skeleton crew right now while the ship is getting repaired. You must be one of the new recruits we're being sent after all the deaths from the last mission."

Holly gave a slight shake of her head and a shrug of her shoulders.

"Ummmm...I'm afraid I don't know..possibly?" she said." I applied for a ship posting a couple of months ago and this is the one I got. I'm sorry...but I don't know about your last mission."

This news was a sobering side to her excitement. She felt slightly awkward as though she should have known.

Boxwain sighed. "We brought a probe aboard that had been used as a home for a noncorporeal being and it took over the ship and tried to kill us," she said. "We lost over two hundred personnel before we got control back and the entity surrendered."

The brunette shook her head and reached for a tricorder. "If you'll just have a seat on one of the biobeds, we'll get you taken care of. Oh! Don't summon the EMH. It has issues."

{Two hundred people?} Holly thought as she walked to the nearest bed. Looking at the Lieutenant she said: "That's dreadful. I'm sorry to learn it and sorry too if any were your friends."
She perched on the edge of the bio bed and realized what else she had been told.
"Issues? what issues?"

"Thank you," Boxwain said. "One of them was a good friend of mine." She calibrated the tricorder and looked back at Meadows. "It tries to neuter males," she said.

"Oh" Holly said and bit her lower lip. "That's...ummm...could be....awkward?"

"Just a bit," the ACMO said. "Which is why it's offline right now. Do you have any allergies, special needs or anything I should be aware of before I do the scan?"

"No no and no." Holly replied.

Boxwain detached the scanner from the tricorder and ran it over Meadows while she looked at the screen. "I see you've broken your left arm before," she said. "But other than that and a small scar behind your ear, you look fine. Did you want the scar removed?"

Holly raised her hand to finger the scar.
"No it's fine." she said. "It's of no importance...but thank you."

The brunette Medical officer finished the scan and looked at the results, then entered it into the computer interface to check against Meadow's last scan. "You check out fine, Ensign," she said. "Do you have any questions?"

"Thank you. Is it...umm..is it ok if I have a look around?" Holly ventured.

"Certainly," Boxwain said with a smile. "We have two full decks dedicated to Medical. Did you want me to show you around a bit? We have facilities for everything imaginable and the capability to research the unimaginable."

"Do you have the time?" Holly asked with hardly hidden eagerness.

The other Medical officer smiled at the Ensign's eagerness. She had been like that too when she had first came aboard. "Let me just file this examination away, then I can show you around some. Do you have any particular area of expertise?"

Holly shook her head.
"Not yet. I think it's too soon to specialise..well at least for me. I know some people have their heart set on a certain thing from the outset but I'd like to see what I'm suited to best." She laughed a little "I mean IF I'm suited to anything especially. It could be that general medicine will be my niche." She smiled to her companion.

"That's very smart," Boxwain said. "I'm more administrative medical but I know enough general medicine to do physicals and such. Shall we get started?"

"Yes please." Holly got to her feet ready to follow her guide.

"Of course, this is the main Sickbay," Boxwain said as she led the other woman down past the rows of biobeds. "We're equipped to handle every Federation species as well as several non-Federation species and have sixty patient care rooms throughout this deck."

She passed through a door in the back of the large room passed the Chief Medical Officer's office and it was revealed to be full of cubicles filled with personnel at terminals. "This is our administration complex and where we process everything that goes on throughout both decks of Medical. We can instantly access any patient data and transfer it where it needs to go."

"Impressive." Holly replied, glancing about her.

The brunette exited the administration complex and headed out of the main sickbay and took a right before she came to another door and entered. "Here is our transporter room dedicated entirely to Medical," she said. "We have three on this floor and three scattered throughout the ship for medical emergencies."

Leaving the transporter room, she showed Meadows around the main pharmacy, the Radiation Therapy Unit, Medical/Surgical Ward, Resuscitation Unit, Biohazard and HazMat Unit and Decontamination Facility, Isolation Unit, Mass Inoculation Clinic, Triage Center, and Shock Trauma Center in a whirlwind tour, answering questions and making introductions as she went.

Holly knew she would take time to learn where everything was and who people were but it was a minor glitch . Her eagerness and excitement at her prospects went undaunted.

Next came a series of rooms ranging from two Intensive Care Units, a Burn Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit,
Nursery, Labor and Delivery Suites, Intermediate Care Unit, Neuro
Stepdown Unit, Artificial Organ and Limb Lab, and over a dozen dedicated Surgical Suites.

"The only thing we have left on this deck is the Medical Imaging Lab, Medical Holodecks one through four and six Medical Holosuites," Boxwain told her.

"It's just so huge." Holly said with an apologetic half smile to the Lieutenant. "Copernicus was large but I just didn't expect this on a ship. I should have perhaps." she added as an afterthought.

Boxwain laughed. "This is only deck seven," she said. "We have an entire deck to go. Did you want to take a break?"

Holly laughed too. "If you have the time then I'd like to see it all." she replied. "It's just amazing."

"The Triumphant is a top of the line ship and only the sixth of its class," Boxwain said proudly. "We would be a flagship, but our commanding officer is only a Captain. The turbolift is this way," she said as she headed out of the surgical suites and down the corridor.

"How long have you been here?" Holly asked falling more or less into step.

"About two weeks," Boxwain said. "The ship had a major overhaul and I came aboard with some other new personnel. The only reason I have the majority of Medical memorized is because I've been in every single area of it at least ten times a day. It'll get easier the longer you're here."

The turbolift door opened and three Medical personnel stepped out and continued on their way before Boxwain entered it.

Holly stepped aside to let them past. "Always the same with new places." she said. " So whats on this deck then?"

As the turbolift took them down to deck eight, the Assistant Chief thought for a moment. "We have the counseling offices, physician offices, Medical crew quarters for those on call, Medical library, Pediatric clinics, dental, OB/GYN clinic, Cardiology, Family Health Center, the Morale Officers office and more," she said as the doors opened.

"How many families are there usually onboard?" was Holly's next question.

"Currently, I couldn't say for certain," Boxwain answered truthfully. "I know we have fifteen hundred civilians on board, though. The Captain is also married and has two children, and his brother is married and has one. I'm certain there's others, but I don't handle Pediatrics or the Family Health Center."

"I loved my time in neo and post natal." Holly said. " Do junior doctors here work on rotation or are we allotted specific areas?"

Boxwain laughed. "You'll probably end up on Gamma shift, which is midnight to oh eight hundred hours," she said. "All Ensigns start there and work your way up from there to other shifts. I would advise learning to sleep when you can because when you go on call, who knows when you'll be able to sleep again."

Holly smiled. "Sleep has never been a problem for me...power naps." she explained.

"Then you'll fit right in," the brunette said as she took her to the Medical Records room, a secondary pharmacy, Intensive Care Units, Orthopedics, a Chaplain's Office with over a hundred denominations listed, Psychology Labs, Psychiatry Labs, and more Surgical Suites.

They walked past endless doors, each with silver lettering showing its designation. Holly wondered whether it was a coincidence, someone's warped humour or planning that had a place of spiritual significance placed nearest to psychology and psychiatry departments.

Over two hours had passed since Holly's arrival through Sickbays entrance. Her mind was crammed with new facts, new sights, new people.

"Thank you so much for this." she said and meant it as she smiled at Lieutenant Boxwain. "I appreciate your time very much."

"Glad to help, Ensign Meadows," Boxwain said with a smile. "Any time you need me, just let me know."

" I will, thankyou again."
